In this tutorial, we will show you how to create a cool vintage collage, in Photoshop CS5, and apply it to a stock image. Layered PSD file included. Let’s get started!
Final Image Preview

Start working by creating a new document (Ctrl+N) in Adobe Photoshop CS5 with the size 1000px by 1500px (RGB color mode) at a resolution of 72 pixels/inch. Use the Paint Bucket Tool (G) to fill with #9A9A9A color the new background layer.

Find a stock photo with a model represented on it, I used this Retro portrait from Shutterstock. I would like to thank the author of this photo, or if you prefer, you can substitute similar image of your own.

Remove the background using your favorite tools like Pen Tool (P), Magic Wand Tool (W), Magnetic Lasso (L) or even a simple Filter>Extract and insert it on a new layer in our main document.

Create a new layer and select Hard Round brush from Brush Tool (B).

Use this brush to paint the canvas as shown. The brush’s color is black.

Set Fill to 21% for this layer and change the Blending mode to Overlay.

Hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) and between the portrait’s layer and the brush’s one on the Layers panel to create a clipping mask.

We’ve got the next result:

Create a new layer and choose the Soft Round brush from Brush Tool (B).

Use this brush to paint in black the hair edges and the cigarette itself.

Hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) and click between layers in the Layers panel to create a clipping mask.

We’ve got the next result:

Create a new layer and select the Ellipse Tool (U) to represent a small black ellipse, placing the layer under the model’s one:

Set Fill to 73% for this layer.

Make a copy of the last made layer and apply the Free Transform (Ctrl+T) command to change the copy’s sizes, placing it as below. Apply different value for Fill parameter on the copy on your wish.

Next step we’ll use set of Grunge Brushes from Deviantart. I would like to thank the author of these brushes. Load the brushes from the downloaded set.
Insert after that the mask on each layer containing the circles by choosing Add layer mask on the bottom part of the Layers panel and choose the next brush from Grunge Brushes set.

Use this brush to paint smoothly in each masks of the circles’ layers:

We must represent now the same way one more circle, placing it under the model’s layer. Set Fill to 80% for this layer. The circle’s color is black.

Set the Blending mode for this layer to Hard Light.

Next we’ll represent a triangle, select the Custom Shape Tool (U) in the Tools bar, in the Options bar click the Shape to open the selection menu. Find Triangle at the bottom of the menu, and then double-click a shape thumbnail to select it.

Click and drag to draw the triangle. Firstly we’ll represent one of bigger size and then hold Alt button while drawing the next triangle to cut the middle part, applying a triangle of smaller size. Place the layer under the model’s one.

Set Fill to 45% for this layer.

Make several copies if the layer with the triangle and then apply the Free Transform (Ctrl+T) command to change the copies’ sizes, placing them as it is demonstrated next image. Change the Opacity value on the copies’ layers. On the layer containing the turned around triangle we’ll change the Blending mode to Vivid Light.

Make four more copies of the layer with the triangle, composing a figure like it is shown below on the picture. Place the copies’ layers, using the Free Transform (Ctrl+T). The triangles’ layers will be placed under the model’s layer.

Combine in a group all the layers composing those four triangles (press CTRL button to select the necessary layers and hold on the left mouse’s button while dragging the selected layers on Create a new group icon from bottom part of the Layers panel).
The Opacity for the made group is 92%.

Create a new layer and apply here the next brush from downloaded brushes.

Brush color is #3D322F, set Opacity to 70% in Options bar. Place the layer under the model’s one:

Next we’ll make a copy of the group containing the four triangles and apply Free Transform (Ctrl+T) command to change the copies’ sizes, placing them as it is demonstrated on the picture. The layer will be placed under the model’s one:

Insert the mask on the copy with the triangles’ group by choosing Add layer mask on the bottom part of the Layers panel and choose the next brush from Grunge Brushes set of black color (set Opacity to 40% in Options bar). Paint smoothly in the mask using this brush.

Set the Blending mode for this layer to Hard Light.

Make a copy of the group with the four triangles and use again the Free Transform (Ctrl+T) to change the copy’s sizes as it is demonstrated below. Place the layer under the model’s one. Set Opacity to 64% for this group.

Make one more copy of the triangles’ group and place it the same way from below. Preliminary we’ll make it smaller and turn it around, using the Free Transform (Ctrl+T). Set Opacity to 80% for this group.

Change on the group’s copy the Blending mode to Linear Burn.

Use this brush to apply some brushstrokes as shown on the model’s hair, using the Eyedropper Tool (I), to take preliminary the samples of the color out of the model’s hair. The layer will be situated under the model’s one.

On the next new layer we’ll apply the same brush mentioned above of black color with a different Opacity value and represent the same strokes as on the next picture. Place the layer under the model’s one.

Insert the mask on the same layer by choosing Add layer mask on the bottom part of the Layers panel and choose the Soft Round brush of black color (set Opacity to 30% in Options bar).

Paint in the mask using this brush to change the visibility of the layer as shown.
