Today, I’m going to show you how to mix custom brushes and stock photo in Photoshop CS5 to create awesome grungy style artwork. Layered PSD file included. Let’s get started!
Final Image Preview
Start working by creating a new document (Ctrl+N) in Adobe Photoshop with the size 1280px by 1024px (RGB color mode) at a resolution of 72 pixels/inch. Use the Paint Bucket Tool (G) to fill with #353535 color the new background layer.
Create a new layer and select the Soft Round brush from Brush Tool (B).
Use this brush to paint on the canvas with #A2A2A2 color as shown.
Find a stock photo with a model represented on it, I used this photo from deviantart. I would like to thank the author of this photo, or if you prefer, you can substitute similar image of your own.
Remove the background using your favorite tools like Pen Tool (P), Magic Wand Tool (W), Magnetic Lasso (L) or even a simple Filter>Extract and insert it on a new layer in our main document.
Insert the mask on the model’s layer by choosing Add layer mask on the bottom part of the Layers panel and choose the Flat Curve Thin Stiff Bristles brush of black color.
Paint in the mask using this brush with different Opacity values and brush’s sizes to hide the next zones as it is demonstrated below:
Create a new layer and choose the Paint Bucket Tool (G) to fill it with white color. Place the layer under the model’s one. Press CTRL button and click on the model’s layer. This way we’ll get the next selection. Hide for a while the models’s layer and fill the selection with black color, applying the Paint Bucket Tool (G).
Apply on the layer the next filter: Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur.
We’ve got the next result:
Select for the same layer the next filter: Filter > Pixelate > Color Halftone.
We’ve got the next result:
Set Fill to 0% for this layer and change the Blending mode for this layer to Darker Color.
Make visible again the model’s layer:
Make a copy of the model’s layer and apply on it the next filter: Filter > Filter Gallery > Stylize > Glowing Edges.
We’ve got the next result:
Place this layer under the model’s layer. Make two copies of it. For a better result we have to combine in a group all those three layers with the Glowing Edges filter (press CTRL button to select the necessary layers and hold on the left mouse’s button while dragging the selected layers on Create a new group icon from bottom part of the Layers panel). Choose after that the Free Transform (Ctrl+T) command and move the group to the right, comparing with the man’s layer. Set the Blending mode for this layer to Difference.
Click Create new fill or adjustment layer from bottom part of the Layers panel and click to Curves to adjust the curve shape as shown to make a little color corrections.
We’ve got the next result:
Hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) and click between model’s layer and Curves adjustment layer in the Layers panel to create a clipping mask.

Next step we’ll download sets of brushes for Adobe Photoshop, named: c130_splatter , Old_paper_brushes_by_Annette29 and Seu_Davi. On the next new layer we’ll choose the next brush from c130_splatter set. Use this brush to add some brushstrokes on the canvas with black color (Opacity – 20%). Place the layer under the model’s layer and the layers’ group:

We’ve got the next result:
Create a new layer and choose the next brush from c130_splatterset. The brush have black color.
Change the Opacity value and add some brushstrokes as shown. Place this layer under the model’s layer:
Create a new layer again and choose this time the next brush from Seu_Davi set. The brush have black color (Opacity – 20%).
Use this brush to paint on the canvas as shown. Place this layer under the model’s layer:
On the next new layer we’ll choose the next brush from Old_paper_brushes_by_Annette29 set. The brush have black color (Opacity – 40%).
Use this brush to add the next brushstroke as shown. Place this layer under the model’s layer.
Insert the mask on the layer by choosing Add layer mask on the bottom part of the Layers panel and choose the Soft Round brush of black color (set Opacity to 30% in Options bar).
Paint in the mask using this brush to hide the next zones on the layer as shown:
On the next new layer we’ll choose the next brush from Old_paper_brushes_by_Annette29 set.
Use this brush to add the next brushstroke as shown. The brush have black color (Opacity – 50%). Place the layer under the model’s layer.
As we did before, we have to insert the mask on the layer and hide the next zones on the layer with the same Soft Round brush.
Create now a new layer, applying here the next brush from Old_paper_brushes_by_Annette29 set.
Use this brush to add the next brushstroke of the color #002020 (Opacity – 30%). Place this layer under the model’s one.
Insert the mask on the same layer and choose the Soft Round brush of black color, paint in the maks to hide the middle part of the layer.
We’ve got the next result:
Next we have to create a new layer and use here the Paint Bucket Tool (G) to fill the layer with #EFEFEF color. Place this layer under the model’s one.
Insert the mask on the layer by choosing Add layer mask on the bottom part of the Layers panel and apply the next filter: Filter > Render > Clouds.
Set the Blending mode for this layer to Overlay.
Create again a new layer and apply the Paint Bucket Tool (G) to fill the layer with black color.
Apply on the layer the next filter: Filter > Noise > Add Noise:
We’ve got the next result:
Set Fill to 62% for this layer and change the Blending mode to Color Dodge.
Create a new layer and place it above all the layers connected with the model in Layers panel. Choose the next brush from Old_paper_brushes_by_Annette29 set. of black color.
Use this brush to add the next brushstroke of the black color.
Insert the mask on the layer by choosing Add layer mask on the bottom part of the Layers panel and choose the Soft Round brush of black color (set Opacity to 40% in Options bar).
Paint in the mask using this brush to hide the next zones on the layer. Set Fill to 70% for this layer.
Create the next new layer and select the next brush from earlier mentioned set (Old_paper_brushes_by_Annette29).
Use this brush to add the next brushstroke as shown. The brushes have black color (Opacity – 50%).
Insert the mask on the layer now the same way we did before and paint in the mask to hide the next zones on the layer with a Soft Round brush of black color.
Click Create new fill or adjustment layer from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Hue/Saturation.
Drag the slider to the left to decrease the Saturation of the color range.
Now we have to create a new layer and select again the Soft Round brush.
Use this brush to paint the model as shown:
Set the Blending mode for this layer to Color.
Now we have to draw several lines. Each one should be made on a new layer, because each layer has different settings. The tool in this case is the Line Tool (U), set Wight to 5px in Options bar. The line’s color is #00FF00. Set the Blending mode for this layer to Color Dodge.
The next line has color #FF00FE. Set the Blending mode for this layer to Lighten.
Create a new layer and represent two more lines of the same colors the previous lines have.
Insert the mask on the lines layers by choosing Add layer mask on the bottom part of the Layers panel and choose the Soft Round brush of black color.
Paint in the mask using Soft Round brush to hide the edges:
Paint in the mask using Flat Curve Thin Stiff Bristles brush to hide the next zones on the lines:
We’ve got the next result:
The next line has the color #FF00FE. Set the Blending mode for this layer to Darker Color.
Create a new layer and represent two more lines of the next colors: #00FFEE and #FF00A0. Set the Blending mode for this layer to Color.
Represent now a line of the color #A2FF00. Set the Blending mode for this layer to Overlay.
The next line has the color #BEBEBE, represented with the Line Tool (U) (Weight – 5px). Set Fill to 54% for this layer and change the Blending mode to Color Dodge.
Create a new layer and put on it three more lines, applying the same Line Tool (U) (Weight – 43px). Set the Blending mode for this layer to Overlay.
We’ve got the next result:
Insert the mask on the layer by choosing Add layer mask on the bottom part of the Layers panel and choose the Soft Round brush of black color.
Paint in the mask using this brush to hide the large lines as shown.
Choose the Pen Tool (P), set the drawing mode on Shape Layers in Options bar and draw several triangles of different colors #00FF00, #49FFCE, #FF49D6.
